“The soul becomes dyed with the color of its thoughts.” — Marcus Aurelius
I once coached an agent — I’ll call him John — who was closing eight figures a year in volume and miserable every single day. He had the commissions. He had the rankings. He didn’t have anything else. When I asked him why he got into real estate in the first place, he went quiet for almost a full minute before he could answer.
When was the last time you asked yourself that question — not “how much did I make this month,” but “why am I doing this at all”?
Money Was Never the Formula
Most agents chase one number: commission. It’s the easiest thing to measure, so it becomes the only thing that matters — until it doesn’t. I’ve sat across from agents earning $600,000 a year who were more anxious than the ones earning $80,000, because money without purpose just raises the stakes on the same emptiness.
Elite performance isn’t built on a bigger number. It’s built on three things working together: the body that executes the actions, the mind that supplies the fuel, and the soul that supplies the reason. Take any one of them out and the other two start compensating — usually by burning out.
Feeling this one? You don’t have to figure it out alone — book a free High Performance Call and let’s talk through where you’re at.
Clients Feel the Difference
Here’s what agents chasing pure metrics usually get wrong: buyers and sellers aren’t choosing you because of your script. They’re choosing you because of how being around you makes them feel. Energy is not a soft skill. It’s the first thing a client evaluates, usually before you’ve said a word.
John’s turnaround didn’t come from a new prospecting technique. It came from reconnecting with why he started — supporting his kids, building something his younger self would be proud of — and then rebuilding his business around that reason instead of around the leaderboard. His volume didn’t drop. His dread did.
Take action:
- Write down, in one sentence, why you actually do this job — not the answer that sounds good, the true one.
- Audit your week: how much of it is body (execution) versus mind (motivation) versus soul (purpose)? Most agents are 90% body and starving everywhere else.
- Before your next call, spend thirty seconds reconnecting to that one-sentence reason. Notice what it does to your tone.
This is the same equation I build with every agent inside our High Performance coaching: skills get you in the room, but alignment between what you do, why you do it, and how you show up is what keeps you there without it costing you everything else.
