“I hated every minute of training, but I said, don’t quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion.” — Muhammad Ali
A client of mine — John, back again, because his story keeps proving my point — once told me his goal was to double his GCI in twelve months. Big goal. Then he told me his plan: “I’ll try to do more open homes.” That was it. That was the whole plan.
Compare that to a 23-year-old electrician named Nedd Brockmann, who in 2022 ran 4,000 kilometres from Cottesloe Beach in Perth to Bondi Beach in 47 days, raising more than $2.5 million for homelessness charity Mobilise. Brockmann said it himself: “It wasn’t about breaking any records; it was about showing up and showing that people can do a whole lot more with their lives.”
Would your plan survive 47 straight days of showing up?
Burn the Boats
Gary Keller’s line from The One Thing is one I quote in almost every coaching session I run: “Take complete ownership of your outcomes by holding no one else responsible but yourself.” Brockmann’s run wasn’t a mystery. It was ownership, made physical, one kilometre at a time.
Feeling this one? You don’t have to figure it out alone — book a free High Performance Call and let’s talk through where you’re at.
Four Lessons From the Road
- Go all in. Stop being interested in the result and start being committed to the process that produces it.
- Do whatever it takes. Not the version of “whatever it takes” that fits around your existing schedule — the real one.
- Burn the boats. Be accountable. Remove the exit ramps you’ve quietly left yourself.
- Take extreme ownership. No market conditions, no “difficult” clients, no bad leads. Just you and the outcome.
Take action: Write down the one exit ramp you’ve been keeping open in your business — the thing that lets you off the hook when it gets hard — and close it this week.
This is Radical Ownership in its rawest form. Nobody handed Brockmann that money or those kilometres. He earned every one of them the same way you’ll earn your next listing: by refusing to stop before the work is actually done.
If you’re ready to burn a few boats of your own, book a free High Performance Call.
