“Burnout is not the result of a few days, or even a few weeks, of excessive stress. It’s the sum of every day for years.” — Christina Maslach
I’ve had clients call me from a genuinely dark place — anxiety attacks, hospital visits, thoughts they were ashamed to say out loud. Every one of them was “successful” by the industry’s own scoreboard. Real estate hadn’t broken them. The way they’d been taught to do real estate had.
Is it the job that’s exhausting you, or the way everyone’s told you the job has to be done?
The Numbers Behind the Feeling
The Australia Institute found that “the balance between work and life is deteriorating for four in 10 people.” The OECD Better Life Index puts it plainly: “Long work hours may impair personal health, jeopardise safety and increase stress.” In Australia, Mental Health Foundation Australia reports that “anxiety and depression are the cause of six million lost working days each year, resulting in 12 million days’ worth of reduced productivity.” And it isn’t inevitable — when Toyota Sweden moved to six-hour workdays back in 2002, they reported happier staff, lower turnover, fewer sick days and higher profits.
Feeling this one? You don’t have to figure it out alone — book a free High Performance Call and let’s talk through where you’re at.
What Actually Needs to Change
Real estate offers genuine flexibility and autonomy — most industries would envy the schedule control agents technically have. The problem is the inherited belief system: that busy equals valuable, that visible equals committed, that rest is something you earn after collapse. That belief system is optional. Most agents just never got told it was.
Take action: Name one “industrialised” work habit you’ve inherited without ever questioning it — always-on availability, guilt around rest, equating hours with worth — and change it this week, deliberately.
This is High Performance the way I actually teach it: sustainable, not sacrificial. The job was never supposed to cost you your health to be good at it.
