“What you leave behind is not what is engraved in stone monuments, but what is woven into the lives of others.” — Pericles
I once asked a hugely successful principal — call him John — what he wanted people to say about him after he was gone. He listed his listings, his awards, his revenue. Not one person. He went quiet when I pointed that out, and it changed the way he ran his business from that day forward.
If your career ended today, what would actually be left behind — besides the numbers?
The Paradox We’re All Living
The Dalai Lama described it precisely: “Man sacrifices his health in order to make money. Then he sacrifices money to recuperate his health.” Wayne Dyer talked about the shift from ambition to meaning — from chasing more, to chasing significance. Bill Gates is a public example of it: engagement that goes well beyond writing a cheque. As one line I keep on my wall puts it: “Work for a cause, not applause; live life to express, not to impress.” Jon Gordon names four types of legacy: the legacy of love, excellence, encouragement or purpose. Most agents never consciously pick one — they just default to whichever the industry rewards loudest.
Feeling this one? You don’t have to figure it out alone — book a free High Performance Call and let’s talk through where you’re at.
Three Ways to Build One On Purpose
- Serve others. Adopt a servant heart. Ask “how can I help you?” before you ask what’s in it for you.
- Commit beyond token giving. Engage deeply with a cause, not just a donation line item.
- Decide your legacy type, and live accordingly. Love, excellence, encouragement or purpose — pick one on purpose instead of by accident.
Take action: Write down what you actually want said about you in ten years, and compare it honestly to how this week’s calendar was spent.
This is what Radical Ownership looks like at the end of a career, not just the start of one: owning the legacy, not just the listings. Your bank balance isn’t your legacy. What you built in other people is.
