“It always seems impossible until it’s done.” — Nelson Mandela

Turia Pitt survived burns across 80% of her body — an injury that’s typically fatal — and came back saying, “there was a piece inside me the fire couldn’t get to.” I think about that line every time an agent tells me a tough market has broken their motivation. If Turia Pitt found an untouchable piece inside herself, the rest of us can find ours too.

What’s the piece inside you that a hard quarter can’t actually touch?

What Mental Toughness Actually Is

Angela Duckworth defines grit as “the perseverance and passion to achieve long-term goals,” and her research at West Point studied more than 2,500 cadets attempting “Beast Barracks” — finding that grit, not physical strength or intelligence, predicted who made it through. Professor Peter Clough of Manchester Metropolitan University defines mental toughness as “a mindset that describes the default response we make when faced with stressors, pressures or challenges, irrespective of the prevailing circumstances.” Milton Berle’s line sums up the whole approach: “When opportunity doesn’t knock, build a door.”

Feeling this one? You don’t have to figure it out alone — book a free High Performance Call and let’s talk through where you’re at.

Clough’s Four Areas to Build It

  1. Control. Manage your own emotions and life instead of being managed by them.
  2. Commitment. Keep the promises you make to yourself, not just to clients.
  3. Confidence. Believe in your abilities, or your capacity to build them.
  4. Challenge. Push yourself deliberately, and treat setbacks as data, not verdicts.

Take action: Rate yourself out of 10 on each of Clough’s four areas, and spend the next month on whichever one is lowest.

Washington Irving put the whole idea in one line: “Little minds are tamed and subdued by misfortune, but great minds rise above them.” This is Radical Ownership under pressure — the barrier was never the market. It was always the mind meeting it.
