“You cannot serve from an empty vessel.” — Eleanor Brownn

I once worked with a team leader — call her Sarah again, because burnout doesn’t discriminate by story — who prided herself on always being last. Last to leave, last to eat, last to take a day off. Her team adored her. Her health didn’t. Eighteen months in, she was running on fumes and wondering why her “servant leadership” felt like slow-motion collapse.

Here’s what I told her: you can’t pour from an empty cup, no matter how good your intentions are.

Who’s pouring into you while you pour into everyone else?

Redefining Sustainable Leadership

Hans Selye, the physician who pioneered stress research, said it plainly: “It’s not the stress that kills us; it’s our reaction to it.” Sustainable leaders don’t avoid pressure — they build the capacity to absorb it without breaking, which starts with a permission most leaders never give themselves.

There’s a phrase I repeat to every leader I coach: “You are not required to set yourself on fire to keep others warm.”

Feeling this one? You don’t have to figure it out alone — book a free High Performance Call and let’s talk through where you’re at.

Four Things Sustainable Leaders Do

  1. They put themselves first — not instead of their team, but so there’s something left to give.
  2. They invest in personal development first, not just leadership development.
  3. They have mentors. Bob Proctor described a mentor as “someone who sees more talent and ability within you than you see in yourself, and helps bring it out of you.”
  4. They actively manage stress and anxiety instead of wearing burnout as a badge of honour.

Take action: Block one non-negotiable hour this week for something that refuels you specifically — not your team, not your business. You.

This is what being an Awesome Human in leadership actually requires: looking after the person doing the leading, not just the people being led. Your team needs you standing, not smouldering.
