“In a growth mindset, challenges are exciting rather than threatening.” — Carol Dweck
John came to me convinced he simply wasn’t a “sales person.” He’d said it about himself so many times it had become fact in his own head. The strange part was, none of it was true — he’d just never been taught that the story he was telling himself was a choice, not a diagnosis.
How much of what you believe about your own ability is actually true, and how much is just a sentence you’ve repeated so often it stopped sounding like an opinion?
Positive Thinking Was Never the Answer
For years, the advice for a struggling agent was some version of “just think positive and try again.” It doesn’t work, because a slogan doesn’t rewire anything. What does rewire the brain is deliberate, repeated practice — the same way a muscle changes shape only through repeated resistance, not through wishing it were stronger.
Carol Dweck’s research on growth versus fixed mindsets is the foundation here: agents who believe ability can be developed outperform agents who believe it’s fixed, not because they’re smarter, but because they keep training past the point where a fixed mindset agent quits.
Feeling this one? You don’t have to figure it out alone — book a free High Performance Call and let’s talk through where you’re at.
The F.E.E.D. Method
The framework I use with agents like John has four parts: Focus — choosing deliberately what you give your attention to instead of defaulting to whatever’s loudest. Effort — the repeated reps that actually build new pathways. Effortlessness — the stage where the new behavior stops requiring willpower. And Determination — staying in the process on the days the results haven’t shown up yet.
Take action:
- Write down one belief about yourself as an agent that you’ve never actually tested.
- Choose one small behavior to repeat daily for two weeks — not to master it, just to prove it’s learnable.
- Track effort, not outcome, for those two weeks. The outcome comes later.
This is what being an Awesome Human in this business actually looks like — not arriving with confidence, but building it on purpose. If you’re ready to retrain the story you’ve been telling yourself, book a free High Performance Call.
